Instructions for making a model life size cow
This is the original cow we made and she has served us well for 4 years use.
- Cut cow’s body out of 1 sheet of MDF 8 ft x 4ft
- 4ft is height of cow’s back
- Cut head separately to give extra height
- Eyes are coach bolts which attach head to body
- Tail is rope
- Cow is screwed on to 2 trestle type legs at rear
- Udder is 25 ltr dairy chemical drum with rubber calf teats painted pink. It hangs on a hook on strengthening cross piece at rear.
2nd Cow - We have now made a second model cow which is a little stronger.
The cow is made in the same way but was sawn through the middle and joined with hinges so she could be folded and would fit into a hatch back car. Instead of trestle type legs we made solid props, also hinged to fold inwards.
As you can see, you need a bit of imagination and design skill! If you are really stuck please telephone me, Judi Griffin, at 01983 882239

This is BUTTERCUP. She is a Guernsey cow and can be “milked” and carried around in the back of a car because she folds up! |
Teacher Resources
This Part of the web site contains free resources that can be used in the classroom. Currently there are two games which can be used which can be used for KS1 numeracy.
If you would like to visit a dairy farm in your area with your children, contact your local NFU office – National Farmers Union www.nfuonline.com. You can tell the children all about what a cow eats (grass, silage or hay with some extra vitamins and protein to help them make lots of milk) and where they live (in the field all summer and in the barn when it is really cold) and where they are milked (in the dairy).
